The
Naming of the Dead
Ian Rankin could have called this book 'Quadrophenia' - The Who and their double
concept album are all over this one. (The four 'sides' could be Rebus,
Siobhan, Big Ger Cafferty and Ellen Wylie, if you really wanted to stretch the
analogy). My current favourite band (Elbow) also get a couple of plugs for their
fine album 'Leaders of the Free World', as do my favourite Internet/digital
radio station BBC 6 Music (tune in at
www.bbc.co.uk/6music).
The Live 8, T in the Park and Final Push concerts also form the musical
backdrop to Naming of the Dead - though neither Rebus nor Siobhan seem to get
much time to enjoy any of the acts. Note: Bono, Bob Geldof, Midge Ure and
Bianca Jagger get mentions throughout, but only Midge in a musical context. So
he's the only one I've listed below.
